I wrote for Naavik about Playtika’s acquisition of Reworks, the studio behind the interior design game Redecor. Read the full article here.
Why I wrote about this
Again, a reasonably big one! I think for this one acquisitio price is the interesting part. Surely it must’ve been a bidding war.
The gist of it
Playtika announced the acquisition of Helsinki-based Reworks for $400 million in cash, with up to $200 million tied to an EBITDA-based earnout. Founded in 2018, Reworks quickly established itself with Redecor, a competitor to Glu’s Design Home. After an extended soft launch, Redecor scaled rapidly following its global release in 2020.
The deal stands out for Reworks’ capital efficiency. The company raised only $5.8 million in venture funding before reaching a potential $600 million exit within three years. Redecor’s growth trajectory, combined with the founding team’s prior exit history, positioned Reworks as a premium acquisition target.
For Playtika, the acquisition aligns with its broader M&A strategy of buying category-leading live games that appeal to similar demographics. Redecor fits well alongside Playtika’s existing portfolio, both in terms of audience profile and cross-promotion potential. From a financial perspective, the valuation implies revenue multiples that suggest strong competition among potential buyers.
Key takeaways
- Reworks achieved a high-value exit with minimal venture funding.
- Redecor fits Playtika’s portfolio demographically and strategically.
- M&A remains a key growth lever for large mobile game publishers.
- Revenue multiples suggest strong demand for scalable, live-operated games.
