Why I wrote about this
Every year, I like to take a look at the breakout new titles. Since the top 100 has been stubbornly static for years, there aren’t usually that many of those, and each of those is an important lesson in top-tier execution.

Diablo Immortal – Blizzard’s mobile ARPG adaptation of its flagship IP, pairing polished hack ‘n’ slash gameplay with aggressive gacha-style monetization.

Key takeaways
- The Top 100 is difficult to break into. but strong execution still creates openings.
- You can win with niche whale monetization (NIKKE) or broad mass-market reach (Survivor!.io).
- Even mature genres like puzzle and card battlers leave room for innovation.
- IP can amplify success, but it cannot compensate for weak core design.
- The common denominator isn’t genre novelty, it’s delivering exactly what a specific audience wants, at scale.
