I wrote for Naavik about Metacore’s acquisition of animation studio Piñata. Read the full article here.

Why I wrote about this

This is a small deal: fewer than 20 people and low single-digit millions in revenue. But the “why” behind it is far more interesting than the size. Also, it’s in my backyard and I have friends at both companies, which makes it interesting to write about.

The gist of it

Metacore, the maker of Merge Mansion, acquired Helsinki-based animation and illustration studio Piñata, a long-time partner known locally for high-end concept art and animation. While specialized art talent is common in AAA, it’s still relatively rare in mobile.

However, Merge Mansion leans heavily on hand-crafted animated UA creatives. Many of its ads are 30–60 second animated shorts, often starting with a narrative hook before transitioning into gameplay. High-fidelity animation at that scale is neither cheap nor easy, especially when fresh creatives are constantly required. Owning the pipeline instead of renting it changes the economics and the control.

Still, acquiring an animation studio purely for ads feels excessive. The more likely play is broader: deeper involvement in concept art, narrative development, and visual direction across Merge Mansion and future titles. That said, Piñata is not a game development studio. And moving from a multi-client creative house to serving one primary owner could trade creative variety for stability.

There’s also historical precedent. Rovio once acquired its long-time animation partner Kombo, which helped shape the Angry Birds IP. The attempt to build a standalone animation business delivered mixed results. Metacore is operating in a different era but the parallel is hard to ignore.

In a post-targeting world where mobile ads range from fake gameplay to outright shock value, Metacore seems to be doubling down on polished, narrative-driven creatives. In some ways, it’s a return to AAA-style trailers and brand advertising, just adapted for performance marketing.

Key takeaways

  • The deal is small in size but telling about the state of performance marketnig.
  • High-end animation and narrative-driven UA are central to Merge Mansion’s marketing engine.
  • In a sea of gimmicky ads, Metacore is betting on quality and storytelling to stand out.
